He worked the midwest circuit through the worst of it with a 3-piece band beside him. Roadhouses, tobacco barns, dance halls that smelled like sawdust and effort. The crowds came hungry for something the radio couldn’t give them.
He gave it to them every night. Black hat, one turkey feather, and everything he had.
The road didn’t break him. It built him.
